Software Testing Engineer:

Before a computer company launches a new product, they must first test the software. Software testing engineers are responsible for running the new software through a series of tests to determine whether or not there are bugs in the system before it is launched to consumers. It's a big job, but lots of fun. Testers enjoy getting into the product and reviewing its design. The field requires an expert knowledge of the software to be tested, and an employee's desire to have a very different job each day. And remember that the software industry includes video game software, so the next time your mum is telling you to log off WoW, remind her that you're preparing for your challenging career in the high tech industry.

Civil Engineer:

Remember SimCity? If you spent more than a few days building pixelated apartment complexes and laying out sewage treatment facilities, you may want to look into a career as a Civil Engineer. The job entails the planning and execution of structural projects, like bridges, highway systems, dams and waterways. Many civil engineers work on commercial and residential projects and their challenge is to integrate social needs with the technical problems that meeting those needs may cause. Science and math are big subjects in this field, so pay attention next algebra class.

Electrical Engineer:

An electrical engineer needs to be creative and detail oriented. Part of the job is the development of new electronics such as cellular phones, automobiles, robotics and navigational systems, and the other part of the job is returning to existing technologies and improving them. Electrical engineers work with circuits and parts of electronics. See that "Intel Inside" sticker on your computer? Electrical engineers had a big part in that.

Biomedical Engineer:

Here's a field for someone with an interest in biology and medicine and a talent in engineering. Biomedical engineers focus on the design and production of medical equipment and devices (like the MRI-which is all engineered). Some engineers use living tissues combined with synthetics to create medical implants. In this area you would work with health care providers to develop technologies to enhance modern medicine. Pretty cool.

Geological Engineer:

Have a thing for bling? Check out the field of geological engineering. Coal, metals and minerals are all buried deep under the earth's surface and these engineers get to the bottom of it all designing and building mines, shafts and tunnels to access and transport the stuff. Often you'll specialize in a single mineral, since the environmental conditions vary for each one. So, diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but you might prefer muscovite.

Nuclear Engineer:

Okay Homer Simpson, this one isn't for you. Nuclear engineers from Shelbyville probably built the power plant that Monty Burns runs. Responsible for designing and operating nuclear power plants, this type of engineer really has to know their stuff. In case of an emergency, the engineer is responsible for the safety of the plant and surrounding community. There's other careers here too - some nuclear engineers work
